As large of an impact as technology has had on our lives, magnify that times 100 for the next generation. Karen Bartlett’s article on Susan Greenfield highlights many of the concerns Ms. Greenfield has with regards to this specter in our future. Today much of our discussion centers on the physical world being passed to the next generation. Equally important, Ms. Greenfield feels, is the social and cultural gift we will bestow. As we’ve moved deeper into an allience with technology, warning flags have appeared that are largely being ignored. She first asks what technology is doing to the brain as the use of a device increasingly plays a role in how we define “I do”. Also, with the increasing dependence and use as a tool of social interaction, what are the implications as to how we will answer “I am”. Susan Greenfield proposes that there needs to be a discusssion about the end game; how we envision our future world and the role technolgy should play.
